I must say, I like this book. It has a few flaws, which I will mention near the bottom, but overall I found the volume to be quite useful. To begin, the text itself is completely understandable to a modern Westerner. It is clear, concise, and conveys complicated ideas in a comprehensible manner. This quality may be due in part to the... 'Essential' is essentially a misnomer. It is okay, I think, if intended to be read as a primer for someone who plans to read more into this area in the future (like myself). But, I'm still left without a complete understanding of his teachings. After reading this I realize there is alot more to the story than just what is in these pages.... Wow, what a book! And what a translation - so full of fire, Waddell seemed to bring Hakuin alive and place him in the room with me. I warmed to Hakuin deeply - his passionate commitment to both faith and doubt, and his refreshing rage at insipid excuses for enlightenment, and at the waste of lives and talent and given over to thoughtless,...
